Horny Goat Weed

Horny goat weed (Epimedium) is a plant native to China, where it is also known as Yin Yang Huo.

Chinese legend has it that a goat keeper found his goats having increased levels of sexual activity after eating this weed - and this was how the weed got its name.

Researchers have identified the main bioactive compounds in Epimedium which are seven flavonol glycosides: epimedoside A, hexandraside F, epimedin A, epimedin B, epimedin C, icariin, baohuoside-I. (Ref. 1)

Out of them all, icariin is the one that has attracted most attention so far. Icariin has been shown to help with the erectile function in men, and also have neurotrophic effects (promoting the proper function of neurons within the body). (Ref. 2)

Apart from that, horny goat weed had been used in China for thousands of years as a general tonic and anti-rheumatic remedy. It is also used to treat a number of medical conditions including impotence, frequency/urgency of urination, heart disease, bronchitis, and neurasthenia. (Ref. 3)

Further studies report that horny goat weed can be beneficial for treatment of osteoporosis and breast cancer. (Ref. 4 and 5)

Thanks to its chemical composition, horny goat weed has powerful antioxidant properties. (Ref. 6)

High levels of genetic diversity in the genus Epimedium demonstrate its inherent physical strength that it may have gained over a period of time. (Ref. 3)
