Dates (Phoenix dactylifera) are edible sweet fruits of date palm trees. Date palm trees mostly grow in Arabic countries but are also cultivated in other parts of the world, ex., USA, Iran and India.
Medjool dates are one of the cultivar groups of dates, and are sometimes referred to as "the king of dates". They are very sweet, succulent and large in size.
According to USDA Nutrient Data Laboratory, medjool dates are an excellent source of carbohydrates and fibre, and offer a whole number of essential nutrients including: vitamin B complex, vitamin A, vitamin K, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc. (Ref. 1)
Although dates are quite sweet, ironically they may actually help with diabetes.
A study demonstrated how a date fruit extract provided protection against deterioration of the peripheral nerve in diabetic rats. The researchers also concluded that the antioxidant profile of dates is one of the major properties believed to help with neuron protection. (Ref. 2)
